    Anapole Moment and Other Constraints on the Strangeness Conserving Hadronic Weak Interaction

    Standard analyses of low-energy NN and nuclear parity-violating observables have been based on a pi-, rho-, and omega-exchange model capable of describing all five independent s-p partial waves. Here a parallel analysis is performed for the one-body, exchange-current, and nuclear polarization contributions to the anapole moments of 133Cs and 205Tl. The resulting constraints are not consistent, though there remains some degree of uncertainty in the nuclear structure analysis of the atomic moments.Comment: Revtex, 10 pages, 1 figur

    Noise-induced dynamics in bistable systems with delay

    Noise-induced dynamics of a prototypical bistable system with delayed feedback is studied theoretically and numerically. For small noise and magnitude of the feedback, the problem is reduced to the analysis of the two-state model with transition rates depending on the earlier state of the system. In this two-state approximation, we found analytical formulae for the autocorrelation function, the power spectrum, and the linear response to a periodic perturbation. They show very good agreement with direct numerical simulations of the original Langevin equation. The power spectrum has a pronounced peak at the frequency corresponding to the inverse delay time, whose amplitude has a maximum at a certain noise level, thus demonstrating coherence resonance. The linear response to the external periodic force also has maxima at the frequencies corresponding to the inverse delay time and its harmonics.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letter

    This report is published by the MU Variety Testing Program, Division of Plant Sciences, University of Missouri. The work was supported by fees from companies and organizations submitting varieties for evaluation. The large number of varieties available makes selection of a superior variety difficult. To select intelligently, producers need a reliable, unbiased, up-to-date source of information that will permit valid comparisons among available varieties. The objective of the MU Variety Testing Program is to provide this information. Tests are conducted under as close to uniform conditions as possible. Small plots are used to reduce the chance of soil and other variations occurring among variety plots. Results obtained should aid individual growers in judging the relative merits of many of the commercial wheat varieties available in Missouri

    Seasonal influences on first-episode admission in affective and non-affective psychosis

    Background: Since bipolar affective disorder has been recorded, clinicians treating patients with this disorder have noted the cyclic nature of episodes, particularly an increase in mania in the spring and summer months and depression during winter. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate seasonality in symptom onset and service admissions over a period of 10 years in a group of patients (n= 359) with first-episode (FE) mania (n= 133), FE schizoaffective disorder (n= 49) and FE schizophrenia (n= 177). Method: Patients were recruited if they were between 15 and 28 years of age and if they resided in the geographical mental health service catchment area. The number of patients experiencing symptom onset and service admission over each month and season was recorded. Results: In terms of seasonality of time of service admission, the results indicate a high overall seasonality (particularly in men), which was observed in both the schizoaffective and the bipolar groups. In terms of seasonality of symptom onset, the results indicate that seasonality remains in the male bipolar group, but other groups have no seasonal trend. Conclusions: This provides further evidence that systems mediating the entrainment of biological rhythms to the environment may be more pronounced in BPAD than in schizoaffective disorder and schizophrenia.     Renormalization group approach to an Abelian sandpile model on planar lattices

    One important step in the renormalization group (RG) approach to a lattice sandpile model is the exact enumeration of all possible toppling processes of sandpile dynamics inside a cell for RG transformations. Here we propose a computer algorithm to carry out such exact enumeration for cells of planar lattices in RG approach to Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld sandpile model [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 59}, 381 (1987)] and consider both the reduced-high RG equations proposed by Pietronero, Vespignani, and Zapperi (PVZ) [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 72}, 1690 (1994)] and the real-height RG equations proposed by Ivashkevich [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 76}, 3368 (1996)]. Using this algorithm we are able to carry out RG transformations more quickly with large cell size, e.g. 3×33 \times 3 cell for the square (sq) lattice in PVZ RG equations, which is the largest cell size at the present, and find some mistakes in a previous paper [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 51}, 1711 (1995)]. For sq and plane triangular (pt) lattices, we obtain the only attractive fixed point for each lattice and calculate the avalanche exponent τ\tau and the dynamical exponent zz. Our results suggest that the increase of the cell size in the PVZ RG transformation does not lead to more accurate results. The implication of such result is discussed.Comment: 29 pages, 6 figure
